Q Assignment Overview In this discussion board, you will begin to examine poetry not as a matter of right or wrong but as a matter of reflection and perspective. Once you have a position, you will employ one or more rhetorical strategies to ensure that others at least understand, if possible agree with, your position. And you will present these ideas in clear college-level sentences. As you will have noticed, this assignment does not require you to assume a specific point of view or to address a particular point from the reading. The goal is for you to explore ideas and to see your writing as a chance to develop ideas. This open-ended thinking and writing is often a useful way to discover your own insights rather than to replicate someone else’s. Remember, discussion board assignments have two parts--a post and a response. Time Commitment This assignment should take between 60 - 90 minutes. This includes the time to write the post and the two responses. Post (Your post has three parts. Develop each in at least one paragraph) 1. What do you notice about "Theme for English BLinks to an external site."? (You can focus on the rhyme, the structure, the imagery, the speaker, or whatever draws your attention.) 2. What is it about the language and structure that focuses your attention on the elements you mentioned above? (For instance, if you focused on the speaker, what is it about his language that leads you to that focus?) 3. What questions does the poem leave you with? These can be either elements you don't yet fully understand or questions that the poem raises but doesn't answer. Make sure each paragraph is clearly marked. Response You will need to respond to two classmates. For each classmate, write a one-paragraph response talking about how their post leads you to a revised or refined understanding of the poem. Specifics • You must submit at least one post and two peer responses • If you've received feedback on your post and would like to continue that discussion, you can use one of your two peer-responses to do so • All posts must offer a path for developing the classes’ discussion of "Theme for English B". Module Learning Objectives • analyze how your experience as a reader positions your response to works of literature; • review and demonstrate netiquette in class discussion boards submissions to write for an audience of your peers in the discussion boards; • review common definitions of poetry; • analyze how a study of poetry positions us for discussions of other types of literature; Grading As we discussed in the syllabus, your grade on the assignment will be determined by the discussion board rubric. Hello class, I really liked this poem. It was not one of those super complex poems that I can barely understand it, this one had a clear meaning to it, and I liked it. What drew my attention most to this poem was the author speaking about how he was the only colored student in his class. I cannot imagine what he may have gone through during that time. Another thing I noticed was how he tried to make the connection between himself and his professor. He pointed out how they were both different ethnicities but were both American.
